Take your cup of coffee to the next level with a coffee grinder for home use.  There aren’t many things that taste better than a freshly ground cup of coffee, never mind the amazing aroma!

Do coffee grinders make a difference?  They undoubtedly do!  Grinding your own coffee beans at home will allow you to experience new and different, even exotic flavours.  Not only that but if you start off with fresh good quality coffee beans and an even better quality grinder that produces consistent grinds, you will taste the difference no matter what coffee maker you use.

On that note, ensure that the grinder you buy suits the type of coffee you want to make.  Fine grinds are recommended for espressos, medium grind for coffee makers and pour overs and coarse grind for use with a French press.

Baratza Encore Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

4.8/5

Features

  • Alloy steel burrs
  • 40 grind settings (fine to coarse)
  • Pulse setting
  • Bean hopper capacity:  8 oz
  • Speed:  550 RPM
  • Removable burrs for easy cleaning
  • Easy to use

Description

It may be an entry level grinder but it certainly doesn’t perform like one!  This Specialty Coffee Association award winner is ideal for espressos as well as manual brewers such as Aeropress or French press coffee makers.

Conical burr grinders result in a much more even, consistent grind and are superior to blade grinders.  There are 40 grind settings to select from and the pulse setting enables you to top off your grind.  The grinder has a simple on/off switch to ensure continuous grinding

The Baratza Encore is Baratza’s best selling model.  It is a versatile grinder and with it’s alloy steel burrs, it is simple to use and easy to clean.

The bean hopper holds approximately 8 oz coffee beans.  By rotating the hopper you can quickly select the grind setting you prefer.  You will only need to do this once, unless of course you need a different grind the next time you use the machine.

Baratza customer service is second to none which alone is worth spending the extra on.  Their products are serviceable so you don’t need to replace the whole machine if things go wrong, only the malfunctioning part.

Due to it’s quality build, versatility and ease of use, this is a clear winner and earns our overall best grinder for home use.

The Baratza Encore coffee grinder comes with a 1 year warranty.

OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder

4.6/5

Features

  • Stainless steel burrs
  • 15 grind settings (fine to course) + micro fine
  • Bean hopper capacity:  12 oz
  • One start touch
  • Removable top burr for easy cleaning
  • Easy to use

Description

The OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder is a great budget home use coffee grinder.  It easily grinds up enough coffee beans to make up to almost 4 oz of coffee grounds, equivalent to 12 cups of coffee.

Static electricity can be an issue with most coffee grinders due to the speed of the burrs but you won’t have that problem with this grinder.  Due to the lower RPM as well as a stainless steel grounds bin and grounded plug, Oxo have ensured that there is very little, if any, static cling.  This is one major plus in my opinion.

As with the Baratza Encore, the grinder will keep the previous setting so you will only need to press the on button once to get it started.

Although the OXO Brew Conical Burr Coffee Grinder has a larger hopper with UV blocking tint applied, don’t leave coffee beans in for an extended period of time as they will end up giving your coffee a stale taste.  Of course it’s better that not having a UV blocking tint at all but while it can be tempting to fill the hopper to the top, as with most coffee grinders, only grind what you know you’re going to use.  Fresher is always better.

Note that only the top burr is removable and should be cleaned with a small cleaning bristle brush.

This grinder comes with a 2 year warranty.

Description

The TIMEMORE Chestnut C2 manual 5 blade grinder is super easy to use and produces an even grind every time.  With it’s stainless steel core the grinder it will quickly grind down coffee beans.  It grind beans quickly and effortlessly from coarse to fine grinds.  It is particularly great for using with the AeroPress, French press and pour over methods.

Unlike some of the other manual coffee grinders with a smooth finish, this grinder has a raised grid pattern which helps to ensure it doesn’t slip and slide when turning the handle.  The entire grinder can be disassembled for a thorough clean.  A cleaning brush is included.

In-built bearings allow the handle to continue turning for a short while after turning in order to reduce the amount of effort needed to grind the beans.  The bean canister itself is made from aluminum with limited internal plastic parts.

As manual grinders tend to be smaller than electric grinders, this grinder holds approximately 20 – 25g coffee beans.  These are however quickly ground down with it’s stainless steel burrs.

Best small electric coffee grinder for home use:

HadinEEon Electric Coffee Grinder

4.8/5

Features

  • Stainless steel blade
  • One touch control
  • 200W motor
  • Overheat protection
  • Hidden cord for storage
  • Grind settings (extra-fine to coarse)
  • Up to 50g capacity
  • Easy to use

Description

The HadinEEon electric coffee grinder is a small but efficient grinder.  The fact that this grinder has a blade instead of a burr and doesn’t have a mechanical grinding setting is reflected in the price.  BUT, the incredible amount of positive reviews I’ve seen shows that this coffee grinder should not be dismissed.

It quickly grinds coffee beans by pressing down on the button located on the top front of the unit.  The size of the grind is determined by the length of time the button is depressed so to get medium grounds, the button can be held down for 10 seconds.  Less for coarse and slightly longer for extra-fine.  Extra-fine is great for Turkish coffee.

The lid has a safety mechanism which stops the blade from turning if opened and it’s compact size means that it doesn’t take up a lot of room either on the counter or in a cupboard or shelf.

Available in two colors, brown and white, it is also easy to take on vacation.

Included is a cleaning brush and the grinder comes with a lengthy 3 year warranty, the longest we’ve seen so far for a coffee grinder.

If and when something should go wrong with any of your Baratza products then you only need to contact them for a replacement part.

FAQs: Coffee grinders for home use

How much do coffee grinders cost?

Coffee grinders for home use can cost anywhere between $15 and $350.  The smaller models are usually the cheapest and are either manual or not as powerful as the larger grinders.

Your decision to buy a coffee grinder should consider how often you are going to be using it.  A stronger, more well built will be more suitable for frequent use whereas a manual or small electric grinder might suit better.

What is the best burr coffee grinder for home use?

Like most things in life, you get what you pay for.  If you want a well made, long lasting grinder that will give consistent grinds you will end up paying more.  However, the most expensive isn’t necessarily the best so it really does pay to do your research.

It also depends on how often you’ll be using your grinder.  If you only want freshly ground coffee at the weekend then a smaller electric or even hand grinder might suit your needs.  If however you want fresh coffee every day, a more robust grinder like the Baratza Encore  should serve you well.
