General Coffee FAQ's
Is it bad to put hot coffee in the fridge?
The reason it is said that hot food and drinks should not be placed in the refrigerator is that it could potentially lower the overall temperature within the fridge and negatively affect other foods.
According to the Washington State Department of Health, it is perfectly safe to put hot foods into a refrigerator and that the concerns surrounding the safety of doing so are unfounded.
Why does coffee get cold so fast?
Any liquid will cool or warm depending on the temperature of the environment. If the temperature of the room is cold then the coffee will cool quickly. Adding a cold liquid such as milk from the refrigerator will also cool coffee down quicker than just having a plain hot black coffee.
Putting a hot liquid into a cold vessel will also make coffee get colder more quickly. So a few ways of combating cold coffee is to warm up your mug prior to pouring your coffee into it, warming up milk before adding to your coffee or by using a coffee mug warmer to keep your coffee hot.
Why does coffee smell like fish?
There are two schools of thought as to exactly what the reason is for coffee that is sometimes described as having a fishy smell. These are:
1. That the fish smell is due to the chemical reaction that occurs during the roasting of the coffee beans. Dark roasts are dark because they have been roasted for an extended period of time meaning that the coffee beans have been exposed to heat longer than that of lighter roasts. This also the reason there are fewer mentions of lighter roasts smelling like fish.
2. Oils in roasted coffees can go rancid creating an aroma similar to that of fish due to natural oxidation over time.
Either way, the smell usually goes once brewed and does not affect the taste of the coffee.
Is it ok to make coffee the night before?
There is absolutely no problem drinking coffee that was made the night before. In fact you’ve more than likely heard of cold brews. Cold brew coffee is actually placed in the fridge overnight and drunk the next day.

is Turkish coffee gluten free?
If it doesn’t specifically say gluten free on the packaging then I would be very wary just because you don’t know if there has been contamination between the coffee and other products.
Generally, coffee itself is gluten free and the owners of Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi Turkish Coffee have stated that theirs is indeed gluten free.
Is coffee sticky?
Coffee can turn sticky and eventually rock hard and black if left exposed to air or liquid for too long. This could either be because moisture came into contact with the coffee, for example using a wet spoon, or the container the coffee is in is not airtight.

Can you drink coffee while fasting?
Fasting has become more popular as time has gone on due to the advances in the medical field and understanding how the body works. Fasting has proven that extended periods of not eating, within reason, allows the body to heal instead of wasting energy processing food.
There are several fasting diets, some of which include:
- Ketogenic diet (keto)
- 5:2 diet
- Water fasting
- Time restricted fasting ie. Warrior Diet
With regard to drinking coffee whilst fasting, it is only permitted on certain fasting regimes. If you are doing a cleansing fast, then nothing but water should be consumed during fasting.
Ketogenic Diet – As black coffee will not take you out of ketosis, it is permitted whilst fasting. You will need to be aware however of what you add to the coffee as certain ingredients, like milk and sugar, will take your body out of ketosis. Ketosis being where the body is burning the fat in storage cells as opposed to fat currently in your blood stream.
Bulletproof coffees are in line with the keto diet and are a great way to keep satiated whilst fasting to the addition of mct oils and/or butter.
5:2 Diet – This fasting diet requires eating lower calories, typically 500 to 600 calories for 2 days per week. This means that you can drink black coffee as coffee itself is free of calories.
Water Fasting – If you are doing a water fast, which involves consuming only water and no other beverages or foods, then you should not drink coffee, as it will break your water fast.
Time Restricted Fasting – If following time restricted fasting regimes, you are allowed to eat and drink within certain timeframes. You are able to drink coffee with sugar, milk etc within the eating timeframes however only black coffee outside of these times.
So, the answer to this question really does depend on the type of fasting you are undergoing.
It’s important to check with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian to determine what type of fasting is appropriate for you and whether drinking coffee or other beverages is allowed during your fast.
Rumors About Coffee
Why is iced coffee illegal in Canada?
Thankfully, iced coffee is NOT illegal in Canada. This was a rumor that was started on Tik Tok by @taylorjacksonphoto. He claimed that iced coffee had been made illegal because the coffee beans were deemed too expensive by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
Well, if that were indeed true, then ALL coffee would have been banned because iced coffee is simply coffee that has been allowed to cool. They use the same coffee beans.
In addition, where are his legitimate references and sources? The article he shows in his video is nowhere to be found online. So yet again this type of claim is sadly a reminder that you cannot always believe what you read online.

Is Maxwell House International coffee gluten free?
Coffee itself does not contain gluten. It is usually the fact that some instant coffee with flavors are mixed with barley and/or wheat. Or, there may be some form of cross contamination with other products on the same production line as the coffee. This can cause people who are sensitive to gluten to be wary. And rightly so! Those with coeliacs disease for example can suffer terribly for days if accidently consuming products with gluten or even traces of gluten.
The Maxwell House brand is owned by Kraft Heinz. Kraft Heinz have stated that ‘Only certain Kraft Heinz products are labeled with a gluten free claim on the front of the package. These products have been analytically tested and validated to contain less than 20 ppm in accordance with the FDA gluten free definition. You might notice that some Kraft Heinz’s products have ingredient statements that do not list a source of gluten, but unless the product follows the strict procedures to validate the absence of gluten, we do not label the finished product as gluten free.’
According to talkleisure.com, Maxwell House’s decaf, hazelnut and dark roast coffees are free from gluten, however I would be very careful with any product that doesn’t clearly state that it is gluten free.
Who makes Member's Mark coffee?
Walmart inc. owns Sam’s Coffee that produces Members’ Mark coffee. Sam’s Club’s Member’s Mark coffee itself comes from Cafe Bom Dia.
Cafe Bom Dia is Kosher, Fair Trade Certified and has been awarded an Orthodox Union certification. This is to certify that their coffee is made purely from coffee beans and water. No chemicals or flavoring has been added.

Why can't Taehyung drink coffee?
(For those who are curious as to who Taehyung is, he is a member of the South Korean boy band, BTS.)
It is not the fact that Taehyung cannot drink coffee but because he generally doesn’t enjoy bitter tasting drinks, including alcohol. There have been several video clips of him drinking coffee and alcohol and clearly not enjoying them. This has lead some to wonder if there are other issues surrounding his dislike of the bitter drinks.

Unfortunately Dunkin’ Donuts stopped selling their popular chocolate glazed donut coffee in 2019 from stores due to production costs. However, your taste buds may wish to do a happy dance because you can make it at home! It is available as ground coffee from Instacart.
Where to buy dunkin donuts coffee thins?
It appears that Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee Thins are nowhere to be found. They had been spotted in CVS and Safeway however these chocolate squares with caffeine appear to be quite an elusive product and may have been discontinued. Let us know if you find any!
Why does Mcdonalds coffee cup say do not microwave?
If you’ve ever looked at the takeaway cups provided by fast food chains such as McDonalds or Starbucks, you may have noticed that there is a ‘DO NOT MICROWAVE’ warning displayed.
This is due to the fact that the paper they are constructed with, gets hotter more quickly than the hot coffee or tea inside which could result in the cup falling apart at the seams spilling it’s contents everywhere. Another reason is that if used without liquids, the cup could catch fire due to the cup’s dry paper construction.
