Cuisinart DGB-400 Automatic Grind & Brew

4.4/5

Features:

  • Blade grinder
  • 12 cup capacity
  • 24 hour programmable timer mode
  • Easy to operate
  • Fully automatic with auto shut-off
  • 1-4 cup setting
  • Self-cleaning
  • Keep warm function
  • Pause brew feature

Description:

The Cuisinart Grind and Brew DGB-400 is certainly one of the best for the price range and very easy to use.

With it’s blade grinder that makes short work of grinding down coffee beans, you are guaranteed a super fresh brew, full of flavor.  The grinding container comes with a lid which if not secured, will not work.  This is a great safety feature ensuring that no accidents occur.

What I love about this coffee machine is that you don’t have to make 12 cups every time.  Using the 1 – 4 cup setting you can have enough coffee to keep you going all morning.  This coffee machine doesn’t only use fresh beans as you also have the option of using pre-ground coffee.  This is achieved by selecting the ‘grind-off’ option.  The preset grind for the coffee grinder is medium, which is generally the type of grind used by the majority of bean to cup coffee makers.

With it’s programmable feature, you can have a hot cup of Joe waiting for you when you get up in the morning or even when you get home after a long day at work.  It will also beep once complete so you know when your brew cycle is complete.  Coffee will stay hot for up to 2 hours until the machine automatically switches off.

The Cuisinart Grind and Brew DGB-400 uses easily replaceable charcoal water filters and comes with a reusable gold tone filter basket.  Older models have been known to be very loud when grinding the coffee beans but this new and improved model has a quieter grinder.  The coffee maker has a clear window through which you can view the coffee grinder and the amount of coffee beans still left inside.

The water reservoir has indicator lines inside the reservoir itself which is great as you won’t need to pre measure the water before pouring it in.  The Pause Brew feature allows you to remove the carafe from the plate mid brew for 20 seconds in order to pour yourself a cup of coffee before the full cycle is complete.

How many coffee beans per cup?  Well, this is down to personal preference but generally one scoop (provided) of coffee beans per cup is sufficient.  Don’t forget to use filter water for even better tasting coffee as tap water contains chemicals that can taint the taste.

To ensure the best quality coffee, the coffee maker will need cleaning after every use.  Both the grinder basket and lid can be placed in the dishwasher along with the filter basket and filter basket lid.  Just remember to make sure it’s on the top rack only.  The self clean light will illuminate when it is time to decalcify your Cuisinart coffee maker.

Overall, the Cuisinart Grind and Brew DGB-400 is a simple to use, no frills coffee maker that will provide freshly brewed coffee at an affordable price.

Includes: Paper filter, scoop and charcoal water filter.

Gevi 10 Cup Automatic Grind & Brew

4.4/5

Features:

  • Burr grinder
  • 3 strength control settings (strong, medium or mild)
  • Choose up to 8 grind styles (course to fine)
  • 10 cup capacity
  • 24 hour programmable timer mode
  • Easy to operate
  • Fully automatic with auto shut-off
  • 2-10 cup setting
  • Easy to clean
  • Keep warm function

Description:

Another great easy-to-use bean to cup coffee machine.  Although making less cups than the Cuisinart DGB-400, you are able to choose a grind style that suits the type of beans being used and it has a burr grinder.  Burr grinders are known to be more efficient than blade grinders.

The bean grinder container takes up to 7 oz of coffee beans.  The amount used will be determined by how many cups you want to make, which you select on the machine.  The preset default is 10 cups so do make sure you select the amount of cups needed if it is less than 10.  With it’s water indicator visible from the outside of the machine, you can easily see how much water to add.  Or use the carafe’s water indicator lines.

I love that the bean box is visible and easily accessible from the top of the machine.  You can choose what type of coffee grind you would prefer by turning the dial located on the top of the machine.  There are 8 different grind styles ranging from course to fine.  You can also choose the strength of coffee you’d prefer, strong, medium or mild.  Note that it does take a lot longer to make a stronger coffee than it does a lighter one.  This is due to the fact that the water will move slower through the ground beans to get that stronger, richer flavour.  This is not a problem but if you like your coffee strong, you may want to put your machine on a little earlier if programming for a specific time.

You will know when your coffee is ready by the three audible beeps made by the machine.  Unless you turn the coffee machine off straight away, it will automatically switch to keep warm mode for the next 2 hours.

You do not have to use coffee beans with the Gevi coffee maker so if you’ve run out of beans and cannot face the day without any coffee at all, you can use ground coffee.  Simply place the ground coffee directly into the filter basket.  The conical filter basket is a plus as the water is able to reach all of the coffee unlike with flat bottomed filters where coffee can often be left on the perimeter.  The filter will take up to 60 grams of ground coffee.

You will need to clean the filter basket, filter basket holder and lid in warm, soapy water if in use every day.  The coffee bean box can be cleaned with a dry paper towel and the drip outlet with a damp cloth.

One thing to note is that you should only fill the reservoir with the amount of water needed.  If you add say water enough for 10 cups and you only want 2 cups of coffee, the machine will continue to run until the water is finished and you will end up with extremely weak coffee.  The coffee maker will automatically switch to keep warm mode once the water is finished.

So in summary, this bean to cup coffee maker’s biggest advantage apart from being easy to use, is that it can be set to different grinding styles giving you more control over the type of coffee you want to make.

Cuisinart DGB-900 Thermal Automatic Grind & Brew

4.2/5

Features:

  • Burr grinder
  • 12 cup capacity
  • Fully automatic with auto shut-off
  • Stainless steel thermal carafe
  • 3 strength control settings (strong, medium or mild)
  • 24 hour programmable timer mode
  • Pause brew feature
  • Easy to operate
  • 2-12 cup setting
  • Easy to clean

Description:

With it’s coffee strength and grind selections, this Cuisinart DGB-900 Automatic Grind & Brew bean to cup coffee machine is a combination of the above two coffee makers but with extra benefits.  With the addition of a thermal, double-walled non drip carafe your coffee will stay fresher and hotter for longer.  Due to this there is no ‘keep warm’ function as it is no longer necessary.

This is definitely a step up from the DGB-400 in that It has a burr grinder.  A burr grinder, which when compared with a blade grinder, is by far the more superior choice for grinding coffee beans.  There has also been the addition of strength control settings which is another distinct advantage over the DGB-400.

Not only can you use coffee beans but by using the Grind Off button, it allows you to make coffee using pre-ground coffee.  This is placed directly into the filter basket.

You are able to select just how strong you would like your coffee, strong, medium or mild.  Holding half a pound of beans, the bean hopper is a large one and if full, will provide you with two 12 cup carafe’s full of coffee. It has a sealed lid which prevents moisture either escaping from the machine or entering it therefore keeping the beans nice and dry.   If the bean hopper is removed, for safety reasons, the coffee maker will not operate.

The Brew Pause feature allows you to remove the carafe mid brew to pour yourself a cup of coffee.  No mess!  Do make sure you return the carafe within 20 seconds otherwise you risk the filter basket overflowing with coffee.

The coffee machine will automatically shut off once the brewing process has completed.  Easy to clean, removable parts can be added to the top shelf of the dishwasher or washed by hand in clean, warm, soapy water.  The grinder basket and lid can also be removed and cleaned.  It is recommended that you do this daily, if not after every use.  Depending on how often you use your coffee maker, the section underneath the bean hopper will require light brushing to dislodge find coffee granules that have collected there.  For most this can probably be done once a week.

This updated Cuisinart Grind and Brew coffee maker has improved on it’s previous models and does not clog.  It also comes with a 3 year limited warranty.

Includes: Paper filter, scoop and charcoal water filter.

Note that there is another version of this coffee maker that has a glass carafe and is substantially cheaper.  This is also viewable by clicking the button below.

My favourite part, is the addition of a milk frother.  In this bean to cup coffee machine with milk frother, steam and milk are mixed together to create a creamy froth, perfect for a cappuccino or cafe latte.  With it’s patented cappuccino system, you can use any size milk container or pour directly into any size cup or mug.  You can make two espressos at the same time and even programme the coffee maker to remember the strength, drink size etc. so you don’t have to re-enter the same details over and over.

FAQ: Bean to Cup Coffee Machines

What does bean to cup mean?

Bean to cup simply means that a bean to cup coffee maker will grind coffee beans directly before brewing.  The grinder is integrated into the machine so you will not need to separately grind them yourself or use pre-ground coffee (although you can if you wish) which cannot compete with freshly ground beans.

Are bean to cup machines worth it?

In short, if you’re after a fuller flavoured, fresher, more fuller tasting coffee whilst saving time, then a bean to cup coffee machine is for you.  Bean to cup coffee machines can be as good as the coffee a trained barista can make

What is the difference between a bean to cup coffee machine and an espresso machine?

An espresso machine creates coffee ‘shots’ which is a brewing method that originates from Italy.  They are created using Espresso machines that force almost boiling water through finely ground coffee beans at high pressure.  These shots are strong, creamy and rich in flavour and are used to make other coffee drinks like macchiatos, lattes and cappuccinos.

Espresso machines generally do not have a built in grinder whereas a bean to cup coffee machine does.  As you may well know by now, the more recently the coffee bean has been ground, the better tasting your cup of coffee will be.   With a built in grinder, you can enjoy a fuller flavoured brew without having the hassle of pregrinding your coffee beans or relying on packaged ground beans that will not be as fresh.

How do bean to cup coffee machines work?

Bean to cup coffee machines have a built in grinder which directly grind coffee beans before brewing.  The result is a fresher, richer tasting coffee as preground coffee has already lost some of it’s flavour whilst sitting in packaging.

Not only is time saved by not having to grind coffee beans yourself but also space due to not having to store a separate coffee grinder.

So there you have it!

Hopefully you have found the above super helpful.  I always find it easier when shopping to start off with a budget in mind.

My best coffee maker with grinder would undoubtedly be the Breville BES878BSS Barista Pro Espresso Machine.  Not the most expensive but not the cheapest either.  This is the machine I recommend to everyone who seriously wants a superb coffee, as if it were made by an experienced barista.

In fact, with the amount of customization you’re able to do with this bean to cup coffee machine, you WILL be a self-trained barista in no time.
